COPING with THE ‘NEW NORMAL’

Home is the one place where we can be ourselves. Family accepts you for who you are – or do they?  Well COVID-19 will certainly test that…

Family is the most priceless and significant thing that an individual has. It’s where we learn the value of affection, care, love, and truthfulness. Where our beliefs, values and personalities are formed.

With the advent of COVID we are entering into ‘a new normal’.  The first two weeks at home may feel exciting, cozy, and a great way to reconnect. But now as the lockdown is extending, it just seems like a crushing challenge.

So, during this challenging time, what the hell can we do not to get on each other’s nerves? To stick together, to become even stronger?

 

If we focus on family in the same way we focus on doing well with a new partner, or impressing our boss 🙂 we can get through this…

 No Space to Breathe

In the busy routine of our lives, we often find it hard to get free time with our family, well COVID certainly changed that reality.  Now, we not only have time, we are ‘locked in the same ‘quarters’ as our family. On the positive side, sticking with the family members during this time will make us feel like we are not alone in this. On the negative side, do I dare say it?  Yes, yes, family can get on each other’s last nerve :).  So what do we do?

Respect Each Other’s Feelings…

During the current situation, it’s not hard to feel weighed down and stressed.  Well, first of all, let’s not stay ‘too glued’ to the TV, all the deaths, illnesses, struggles can make us feel hopeless.  Switch off and watch a movie, a comedy, relax a bit.

For parents with young children and teenagers facing uncertainty and ambiguity over academic outcomes added to missing out on socializing, it can be particularly stressful. We must understand their feelings and remember when we were kids, how would we have felt in this situation?  Try to communicate openly with your children. Create a ‘new normal that will ensure they can meet academic goals, enjoy themselves without driving you crazy 🙂 – set goals, routines, and fun activities. 

Make time for Each Child

Don’t forget between all the stresses that our children are individuals, make time for each child.  For me, spending time with Travis (my oldest, who is allll the waaaay in Russia) is just fabulous and relaxing.  We can sit and chat rubbish for hours with no particular focus Lol.  As we say in Jamaica ‘a jus’ di vibes”…

Kelli and I can watch all the ‘girly’ movies that drive Trav & Dad crazy, Lol

 What About Your Partner…

It’s a great time to spend quality time with your partner.  Yup, be sexy for him (or her) don’t stay in your PJ’s all day, keep it interesting.  You have heard the saying “respect begets respect”, same is the case with attraction. Make the effort, keep the appeal…

Surround Yourself by Positive Influences

When you think about it, it’s not all bad…

We can now spend the time that would have been spent driving in traffic, etc, to call a friend or family. Though staying positive and happy during this phase of life may seem hard for many, we can surround ourselves by positive influences, make a phone call, read, take the time to ‘smell the roses’

Here’s some Other Things you can do:

  • Cook together – my husband leaves the kitchen most of the time when I’m cooking (lol) unless I faithfully promise not to give him any work or reorganize the kitchen… It’s ok, I stay out of the kitchen when he’s in there (most of the times) but more because I just love being spoilt and having my man cook for me 🙂
  • Have movie night for the family – movie night with family is a fun. Do some popcorn, order or make some pizza, get cozy
  • Promote Personal Space – Spending too much time together is not healthy for any relationship. Create healthy boundaries with family members and desists from interfering in each other’s personal space. This will allow us all to enjoy a healthy relationship.
  • Take up that Hobby You Haven’t had Time for: There’s no time like the present – what are your dreams, what did you want to do but were too busy – Painting? Reading? Dancing.. Let’s get it done…

Important Things to Consider

It’s important to stick together during this tough time but being together all the time can suffocate a relationship. Individuality is very important for happiness.

COVID has changed many of our worlds, let’s make the best of it, let’s be realistic with what is happening, but optimistic about what we can achieve.
